Finding time for yourself as a parent of a child with autism can be challenging, but it is important for your own well-being. Here are some tips to help you find the time you need:

1. Schedule “me time”: Make sure to schedule specific time for yourself in your daily or weekly routine. This could be as simple as taking a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea or going for a walk. Most of my me time is at 1 Am or 6 Am when Chef Justin was little if I took him to therapy I waited in the car with a meditation cd.

2. Ask for help: Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family members, friends, or professionals. You could also consider hiring a babysitter or respite care provider to give you some time off. I always found it easier to swap time with another special needs mom.

3. Practice self-care: Take care of yourself by eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that bring you joy. I think this is the hardest one to accomplish. As moms we always tend to put ourselves last. You can not pour from an empty cup.

4. Join a support group: Connect with other parents who understand what you’re going through. A support group can provide emotional support, advice, and resources.my only support groups are on line but they still help tremendously.

5. Set boundaries: It’s okay to say no to extra commitments or tasks that don’t serve your well-being. Prioritize your own needs and don’t feel guilty about taking care of yourself. Learn that NO is a complete sentence and doesn’t need an apology or explanation.
